The "Vie di San Francesco" in Tuscany is a pilgrimage route of almost 300 kilometres that leads pilgrims and travellers to places associated with key episodes in the life of Saint Francis. The route links Chiusi della Verna with Sansepolcro, Castiglion Fiorentino with Cortona, Arezzo and the other six towns of the Valtiberina: Pieve Santo Stefano, Badia Tedalda, Sestino, Anghiari, Caprese Michelangelo and Monterchi. These paths lead north to Assisi.

Experienced and dedicated hikers can choose to cross the Vie di San Francesco in Tuscany and Valtiberina along two main routes, both of which start from Chiusi della Verna and continue into nearby Umbria.
The first and most famous route follows the ridge of the Alpe della Luna, passing through Pieve Santo Stefano, the Cerbaiolo hermitage, the Montecasale hermitage and Sansepolcro.
The second route, equally important, runs along the Alpe di Catenaia and passes through the Hermitage of Casella, Caprese Michelangelo, the Castle of Montauto, the Cenacolo of Montauto and Anghiari.

Similar to the Camino de Santiago and the Via Francigena, the Cammino Francescano has its own "Credenziale", a travel document issued by a religious authority. This "Credenziale" accompanies
pilgrims on their journey and distinguishes them from other travellers. For each stage completed, dates and stamps from places of hospitality are added to the "Credenziale".
On arrival in Assisi, presentation of the Credenziale entitles the pilgrim to receive the Testimonium Viae Francisci, a certificate attesting to the completion of the pilgrimage.

In the town of Castiglion Fiorentino, the Cammino di San Francesco reaches the historic centre through Petrognano, arrives at Porta Fiorentina, continues to the Convent of San Francesco, follows Corso Italia to Piazza del Comune, then descends towards Porta Romana and the Church of La Consolazione, before leaving Palazzolo area towards the Castle of Montecchio.
